The 307th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne) is having a Waal river crossing commemoration ceremony on 19 October in Fort Bragg.
It was 4 days since the 82nd Airborne Division jumped south of Nijmegen (Operation Market-Garden) that commanding General James M. Gavin ordered his men to take the two bridges by crossing the Waal river in small canvas boats. The 1-504th PIR and 3-504th PIR would be rowed to the other side by the C-Company of the 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion. In the 6 crossings in broad daylight and under heavy enemy fire many men would give their lives but in the end they succeeded to take the two bridges without the enemy have the chance to destroy them.

In a century's worth of milestones, John Orr Wiggins has completed one more mission: his 100th birthday.
He celebrated the occasion Friday with family and friends in his home state of Texas, but the day did not pass unnoticed here in North Carolina.
Wiggins is the third oldest surviving member of the 82nd Airborne Division, according to the 82nd Airborne Division Association. The oldest turned 101 in June.

By Roy Parker Jr.
A wonderful addition has come to light enriching the story of the World War II combat crossing of the Waal River by 82nd Airborne paratroopers.
You remember, it is the story of Maj. Julian Cook and his intrepid two companies of hard-bitten fighting men.
And as I wrote it recently, it also is the story of the often-forgotten combat engineers who were vital to the story.
The new addition is from Cook's son, and I will let you read it right off:
